Title: Oracle Express install fails abysmally
Post by Pete Finnigan on Nov 7th, 2005, 8:02pm
Hi

I downloaded Oracle Express at the weekend and made an attempt to install it yesterday on my main PC server. The install did not go well. The machine runs XP Home which I know is not supported but other versions of Oracle install well on it and work. I ran the installer and Microsoft's spyware program that i have installed did not like it and crashed te installer. I could not resrat it. I had to shutdown and delete the files in safe mode.

I started again. This time the install went OK. I chose new ports for 1521, 2030 and 8080 as these are already in use by a 9iR2 install. The install hung when it got to the starting services part. I left it 40 mins and then could not kill it. The process did not even show up in the task manager. I ended up shutting down to clean things up as any screen (Word, IE etc) hung on entry for 30 seconds as well.

I restarted and the database install would not run, sqlplus doesnt start the service for the listener is missing. I scooted over to the docs and found how to un-install. It says to use control panel->add remove programs and uninstall. errr, no, there is no entry for XE as the install failed.

Now the question, does anyone have a definative de-install guide? - i.e. what files, services, registry entries need to be removed.

I recon I will try a re-install after I clean it up. This time turning off all the stuff in the system tray, firewall, spyware, etc.

anyone else had any trouble?

cheers

Pete

My XP SP2 Home setup (Microsoft spyware, AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall) was fine. I think there hasn't been sufficient ironing out of bugs when installing on a machine that already has another Oracle database server installed.

I'd recently had to clear down my machine after it lost power while trying to make a partition bigger (Ouch), so I was lucky to have it clean at the right time.

[Warning : When you do a repair install of Windows, make sure you have the same number of flash drives plugged in as the first install, otherwise it gets very confused with the drive letters.]

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your reply. I guessed it was probably either the spyware, virus/firewall or more likely because I have another Oracle database installed. I will try again with it at the weekend - if anyone has some steps to cleanly remove everything from XE it would be useful.

cheers

Pete
